WBB: Christofferson Lifts ISU Over UNI 67-59

CEDAR FALLS - The University of Northern Iowa had to deal with more than just a poor shooting night. With three key Panthers out due to injuries, UNI battled back from a 13 point halftime deficit, but Iowa State had an answer for every Panther run in a 67-59 victory.

Hallie Christofferson led the Cyclones with a double-double – 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Panthers, already without Sharnae Lamar, Amber Kirschbaum and Mercedees Morgan, were plagued by foul trouble early in the first half. Forward Jess McDowell went to the bench with her third foul which forced center Jen Kietel was forced to play the half with two fouls of her own.

"Our lack of experience came in," coach Tanya Warren said. "There were times we were taking the first open three, when in actuality you want ISU to defend. We wanted to engage them in more ball screens, but I thought we settled for three's."

UNI took 34 shots from beyond the arc, connecting on just 11 of them.

"It's a little high, but we're shooting too many three's. We have to get more touches on the block and score a little bit more on the block," Warren said.

The Panthers would battle back in the second half, cutting the Iowa State lead down to five points on a Hannah Schonhardt 3-pointer with just over five minutes left in the game, the closest the score had been since the 10 minute mark of the first half, but Christofferson answered once again with a 3-pointer of her own. The Panthers would never get closer than five points again.

"There's probably five times in the second half where I was on the verge of calling timeout," ISU Coach Bill Fennelly said. "They got to five, and we hit a big shot. Every time they were within one possession of making it real interesting, we did something."

Jacqui Kalin led the Panthers with 19 points on 8-21 shooting.

With the win, ISU improves to 7-1, with its only loss coming to in-state rival Iowa. The Panthers are now 4-6 on the season.
