WBB: Hawkeyes' Point Guard Thomas To Transfer
By Jeff Linder, Reporter
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Backup point guard Kathy Thomas has been granted release from her women's basketball scholarship at the University of Iowa and will be allowed to transfer to another school.
"I would like to thank the coaches for giving me this opportunity. They are tremendous people," said Thomas, a Flint, Mich., native who played one season with the Hawkeyes after one year of junior-college ball.
"I would also like to thank my teammates. I have never been around such an intelligent group of young ladies who work hard every day. This is a hard decision for me. As a player who loves the game of basketball, I have to make the right decision for me and my future. I will never forget the opportunities Iowa has given me."
Thomas averaged 6 minutes, 1.6 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 32 games off the bench as a sophomore last season.
"We appreciate Kathy's effort and contributions this past season," said Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder. "Kathy indicated she wants to be closer to home, and we have granted her request. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors."
Iowa returns nine letterwinners from a team that went 21-13 and made its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance last season, also adding freshmen Ally Disterhoft and Alexa Kastanek.
