CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cornell accomplished something Saturday it hadn’t done before.

Cornell defeated Monmouth, 63-52, for the Midwest Conference Tournament championship and earned the school’s first berth in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. The victory also avenged the only loss this season for the 11th-ranked Rams (24-1).

Cornell led 39-24 at halftime, then stretched that lead to 26 points at 54-28 with 11:04 to play. The Rams coasted in from there, and the celebration began.

Rikki Mulloy topped Cornell scorers with 17 points. Kellie Kuzmanic and Larissa Brewer added 10 points apiece and shared the team’s rebound lead with seven.

First-round NCAA tournament play begins Friday.

KIRKWOOD 59, SOUTHEASTERN 45 — No. 2 Kirkwood (25-3, 14-0 ICCAC) won its 17th straight and wrapped up the No. 1 seed in next month’s regional tournament.

Kiana Jacobs scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the victory at Keokuk. Whitney Rohrbach added 11 points.

DRAKE 82, UNI 67 — Drake shot 57.9-percent from the floor, including 56.5 percent from 3-point distance (13 of 23), for the Missouri Valley Conference victory in Cedar Falls.

Kyndal Clark scored 23 points for Drake (9-17, 4-11), and Jacqui Kalin scored a game-high 25 points for UNI (12-14, 7-7).
