UNI Takes Down South Dakota State 3-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated South Dakota State 3-1 on Tuesday night in the McLeod Center.
Macy Ubben had a career high 21 kills, and Shelby Kintzel had a team leading .367 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell tallied 53 assists, and Amie Held recorded a career high 28 digs.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set. With help from three kills by Kinsey Caldwell, UNI increased their lead to ten at 15-5 at the first timeout of the set. The Panthers cruised through the rest of the set and won it 25-11.
The score was tied at 6-6 in the second set when a kill by Leigh Pudwill gave the Panthers the 7-6 lead. SDSU answered with a kill in the next play to tie it again it at 7-7. A kill by Shelby Kintzel and an attack error by the Jackrabbits put UNI back on top at 9-7. The Panthers increased their lead to six, at the first timeout of the set, to make it 18-12. UNI held on to the momentum and the lead to win the set 25-16 to take the 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, UNI took the early 6-3 lead. South Dakota State then went on a 5-0 run to take the lead at 8-6. A kill by Macy Ubben in the next play helped UNI start a 4-2 run to tie the set up at 10-10. The Jackrabbits got a kill in the next play to take the 11-10 lead, but the Panthers answered with a kill by Pudwill to tie it back up at 11-11. The set went back and forth until the very end when the score was tied at 25-25. A service ace by SDSU and an attack error by the Panthers gave the Jackrabbits the 27-25 set win.
South Dakota reversed the roles in the fourth set and took the early 6-0 lead. UNI fought their way back to catch the Jackrabbits and tied the set up at 12-12. A kill by SDSU gave them the 13-12 lead, but UNI answered with a kill by Ubben to tie it up at 13-13. The score went back and forth until it was tied at 15-15. SDSU then went on a 5-0 run to take the 20-15 lead. Kills by Courtney and Shelby Kintzel and Eryca Hingtgen helped UNI go on a 7-2 run to come back and tie it at 22-22. The teams switched leads several more times until the score was tied at 24-24. Back-to-back kills from Macy Ubben and Courtney Kintzel gave the Panthers the 26-24 set win and the 3-1 match victory.
The UNI volleyball team will return to the McLeod Center on Saturday night at 7:00 to take on the Drake Bulldogs.
