Track: Linn-Mar's Scott Does It On Track, Too

By Jeff Linder and Scott Saville, Reporters

MARION, Iowa -- "Hot stuff" in middle school. Humbled as a freshman.

Now, Perrion Scott has it together. And he and his sprinting buddies give the Linn-Mar Lions an added dimension that might push the them over the top.

Scott has a hand in four titles as the Lions prevailed in a competitive boys' race at Thursday's Class 4A state-qualifying track meet at Linn-Mar Stadium.

"We treat every meet as a track meet," said the speedy sophomore. "It's not too big, not too small."

Linn-Mar accumulated 136 points to outscore Iowa City High (117), Cedar Rapids Prairie (112) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (106).

More importantly, the Lions picked up 11 automatic state bids. They won seven events and picked up four runners-up.

The top two finishers in each event earned automatic berths to the state meet next week at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The other 12 spots in each event will be determined after the statewide results are complete.

Two 4A meets were postponed Thursday to Friday, so the list of state qualifiers probably won't be available until Saturday.

Scott won the 100- and 200-meter races, anchored the victorious 800-meter relay and led off the winning 400 relay.

"It's like a dream to be good in high school," he said. "I was pretty fast in middle school, and I thought I was hot stuff."

Insufficient academics made him ineligible for a good portion of his freshman campaign.

"I've learned from my mistakes, and now I'm executing in the classroom," he said proudly.

The Lions put themselves in position to contend for the 4A state championship next week. They added titles from Mike Keiser in the 110 hurdles, Josh Evans in the 1,600, and its 3,200-meter relay team.

Evans was the 3,200 runner-up.

City High was the girls' champion with 151.83 points, followed by Linn-Mar (139.33), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (122.33) and Kennedy (112).

Jefferson won eight events and earned 11 automatic state bids.

"We had a great meet," said Rachel Broghammer, the J-Hawks' senior relay hammer. "We had a lot of people shine. Everything fell together.

"I'm confident in what we can do at state. Put us up against anybody, and we can definitely compete."

Relays are the J-Hawks' bread and butter; they won five of them Thursday -- the shuttle hurdle, sprint medley and 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays.

Broghammer anchored the 400- and 1,600-meter relays with less than 5 minutes' rest.

"I do that a lot, and I usually don't notice it much," she said. "But I ran the sprint medley tonight too, so I was busy at the end of the meet.

"I'm pretty tired, but I'm really happy."

City High won five events, highlighted by 1-2 finished in the shot put and 400, and tallied 10 automatic qualifiers.

Abby Saehler won the high jump in dramatic fashion, clearing 5-1 and 5-2 while nicking the bar on both clearances.

"It was kind of a lucky thing," she said. "Everybody gets lucky like that once or twice. I felt it at 5-1 and got off the mat as quick as I could. I didn't feel it at 5-2, but saw the bar (wobbling). I'm glad it stayed on."

Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks was a triple winner, capturing the 800, 1,500 and 3,000. The Lions have six automatic qualifiers.
