Tony Ramos Wins National Championship

By KCRG Sports

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tony Ramos is a national champion.

The Hawkeye senior scored a two-point nearfall in a tie-break period to beat Wisconsin's Tyler Graff, 3-1, on Saturday night. The victory gave Ramos the one accomplishment his career at Iowa lacked: an NCAA title.

Ramos struggled to open up his offense for most of the match, and trailed 1-0 heading into the third period. An escape with 1:40 remaining sent the match to overtime, where neither Ramos nor Graff could score. The pair went to a tie-break period, and Ramos failed to escape in the first :30. That meant he needed to prevent a Graff escape in order to move on to a second tie-break period.

Instead, Ramos simply won the match. He grabbed a hold of Graff's foot as the Badger tried to escape, and rolled him over to his back for nearfall points. The call went to review, as officials checked whether Ramos had Graff rolled over long enough for the winning points.

After the call was confirmed, Ramos sprinted off the mat and jumped into the stands for a group hug with his family in the front row. Watch the celebration, and coach Tom Brands speak to the media, below.
