Tennis Player Seely Goes Back to School, And The Court, at 41
By John Campbell, Reporter
CEDAR RAPIDS -- At age 39, Erin Seely of Cedar Rapids decided to go back to college. At age 41, she inquired about hitting with the Cornell tennis team.
One thing led to another.
"I am the only senior on the team," Seely said. "In more ways than one, yes. I have the coach beat by 20 years."
On the bench once, one of Seely's Cornell teammates asked if she was a player's mom.
"I could be, but I'm not," Seely said.
Actually, Erin is married and has a son in high school and another at the University of Iowa. She hopes playing college tennis will make her a better coach.
It has definitely expanded her musical knowledge.
"There have been some long van rides," she said. "Their music is different than what's on my iPod.
"I have enjoyed every minute of it."
Seely will graduate in May with a degree in Kinesiology.
