Panthers' Sievertsen, Carnes Win Weekly Awards

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior placekicker Tyler Sievertsen and junior quarterback Brion Carnes were honored by the Missouri Valley Football Conference today by being named the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week and MVFC Newcomer of the Week.

Sievertsen knocked in the game winning 34-yard field goal as time expired in the Panthers 22-20 victory over the No. 9 Youngstown State Penguins on Saturday. He finished with 10 points on the day, including his 49-yarder in the first quarter to get UNI on the scoreboard.

The senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa connected on his 49, 37 and 34 yard field goals along with a PAT. He is now seventh all-time at UNI with 252 career points.

In his first career start under center for the Panthers, Carnes led UNI past the Penguins, finishing the game 18-30-1 for 219 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing yards with 65.

Carnes and Chad Owens were in sync on Saturday, linking up in the end zone twice during critical moments in the fourth quarter, putting UNI in position for the win. His 13-yard pass to Owens with 13:00 minutes left in the fourth put UNI within two points of the Penguins, followed by his two-yard pass with 9:58 on the clock to put UNI up 19-14.

Sievertsen, Carnes and the Panthers will return to action Saturday, Nov. 16 when they hit the road to take on the Missouri State Bears. The game is set to kickoff at 1 p.m.
