VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — David Johnson ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for another score to lead Northern Iowa past South Dakota 24-21 on Saturday.
Johnson, who finished with 130 yards rushing on 21 carries, scored on runs of 3 and 1 yards, and caught his only pass of the game, a 20-yarder from Sawyer Kollmorgen for the Panthers (4-6, 3-4 Missouri Valley). It was Johnson's fifth game in a row with at least 100 yards.
The Coyotes (1-9, 0-7) lost their eighth straight despite the efforts of Josh Vander Maten, who threw for 205 yards and ran for 135 more. He accounted for two scores. Will Powell caught nine passes for 127 yards and a touchdown for South Dakota, which hasn't beaten Northern Iowa since 1981.
