MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- The Statesmen soccer team is beginning to click at the right time as it collected its first Midwest Collegiate Conference win, dropping Iowa Wesleyan 4-1 Tuesday.
William Penn (2-7-2, 1-3-1 MCC) outshot the Tigers just 13-11, but was much more opportunistic, beginning with an unassisted goal by Tom Hogan (Sr., East Moline, Ill., Iowa Central CC) at the 29:16 mark.
Tyler Mather (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa Western CC) had a part in the next two goals which came in the early minutes of the second stanza. He scored one, his fourth of the year, and assisted on the other by Joshua Jacobs (Fr., Luton, England, Potteridge HS). Jeff Kelly (Jr., Ottumwa, Indian Hills CC) earned his first assist of 2011 on Mather's goal. Mather leads the navy and gold with four goals.
Jacobs' goal is his third of the year (all in the last two games), while Mather and Brandon Nicholson (Jr., Cedar Falls, Cedar Falls HS), who was also credited with the help, now have one assist each.
Iowa Wesleyan (4-7, 1-3 MCC) put its only score on the board in the 84th minute, but David Martinez (So., Dallas, Texas, Hillcrest HS), with the assist to Austin Ryan (Fr., Parkersburg, Aplington-Parkersburg HS), answered soon thereafter with his first collegiate goal in the 89th minute.
Sam Gurski (So., Beaumont, Texas, West Brook HS) posted four saves on the afternoon. The victory snaps a five-game non-winning streak (0-4-1).
