PEORIA, Ill. – Starting pitcher Josue Montanez threw 7 2/3 strong innings to lift the Cedar Rapids Kernels past Peoria, 3-1, Sunday afternoon.

It’s the 10th win in 11 games for Cedar Rapids, which is a season-high 31 games over .500 at 77-46. The Kernels and Chiefs play again Monday night at 6:30.

Cedar Rapids is 5 1/2 games up on second-place Quad Cities in the second-half Midwest League Western Division standings.

Montanez (5-5) gave up seven hits and struck out four, losing a shutout in the eighth inning. Brian Gilbert got the last four outs for his fourth save.

Mike Gonzales, just off the disabled list, hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to put the Kernels on top, 1-0. Two insurance runs in the seventh were telltale.

The Kernels and parent Minnesota Twins announced Sunday that second baseman-shortstop Jorge Polanco has been placed on the seven-day disabled list with a strained right groin. Polanco is hitting .307 in 111 games, with 31 doubles, 10 triples, four home runs and 76 RBIs.

There was no immediate replacement announced for Polanco, so the Kernels have 24 active players, one shy of maximum.
