Iowa Bye Week

Through six games, Iowa has the same record as last fall, but the coaching staff is more optimistic this time around and the reason is depth.

"We've got more guys that we feel like we can play and that's a good thing," said offensive coordinator Greg Davis. "And we got more guys that I think can fill different roles than we did last year."

"I feel good about the group, how close they are, the chemistry," added defensive coordinator Phil Parker. "I think we have more depth. I think there's more guys that are capable of going on the field and perform at a high level to win."

The bye week serves multiple purposes for both the players and coaches and the staff agrees this is a good time for a short break.

"Yesterday was all about looking in the mirror and trying to decide what we have done well, where we have fallen short, ect."

On the offensive side, coach Davis has liked what he's seen from first year starter Jake Rudock.

"When you look at our third down conversion we're much better than we were last year at this time. Part of the reason is his ability to make plays with his feet."

Defensively, Iowa ranks extremely high in rush defense and total defense, and the three veteran linebackers have been a big reason why.

"It's a lot easier when all three linebackers are on the same page with the secondary and up front guys. That's really made us a little more flexible in the defenses we call."
