Hawks Trying to Clean Up Mistakes

It wasn't the score most would have thought, but Iowa got back in the win column 28-14 over Missouri State, but not without some hiccups, namely penalties.

"We're not going to win game consistently playing the way we did Saturday," remarked head coach Kirk Ferentz. "We took one penalty intentionally, but we had nine for 95 yards and that's just not going to cut it. It hasn't been an issue, but it sure was Saturday, and if it continues it will be an issue so we have to correct that and that's everybody."

Another area of concern is in the secondary where the Hawks have been susceptible to big plays like the double move Julian Burton put on true freshman Desmond King.

"None of those things were communication errors, so that's a positive that we can take from it. It just comes down to technique type things and making a split second decision a little faster and a little bit differently, but we got to stay focused play in and play out," said senior Tanner Miller.

Fellow safety John Lowdermilk agreed.

"We got to communicate well with the corners and linebackers and everybody but we got to stay focused the whole time." We can't get lazy. If they're running the ball and then all of a sudden they try and hit us deep we can't get lazy on that, so we just have to be really focused all the time."

King was taking the place of the injured Jordan Lomax. Coach Ferentz is still uncertain if he'll play this week.

"He's scheduled to practice some today, not the entire practice but scheduled to go some. Kind of leveled off last week which we were hoping to see improvement and there really wasn't any until Thursday, so it was kind of late in the week that week. We expect him to practice partial today, and hopefully the whole thing tomorrow unless he goes backwards."

Whether it's King or Lomax on Saturday, you can bet Iowa State will take some shots downfield.
