Hawkeye Wrestlers Look to Become "Household Names" in 2013

IOWA CITY -- The Iowa wrestling team is disappointed about last season.

The Hawkeyes as a team finished fourth in the NCAA Tournament. They didn't win an individual championship in the Big Ten for the first time since 2006.

They only had one national champion in Derek St. John.

"Ultimately we didn't get what we wanted, and we're working to turn that around," St. John said.

The key for the Hawkeyes is replacing two-time NCAA champion Matt McDonough at 125 pounds. Two redshirt freshman are vying for that spot: Cory Clark, and Thomas Gilman.

"We knew when we recruited them that we had two 125 pounders," head coach Tom Brands said. "But we also knew we had two of the best kids in the country. It wasn't an issue, and it isn't an issue now. It's good for us."

The Hawkeyes return four All-Americans from last season, but with some questions in the lightweights, every point will matter.

"Giving away weight classes, I don't want to go into that," Brands said. "That's been a theme the last two seasons. I don't want to talk about that. Make a name for yourself."
