Girls Basketball: Martin Injury Mars Kennedy's Win

CEDAR RAPIDS Paige Hendrickson was prepared for the worst.

Class 5A ninth-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy held off 4A No. 9 Dubuque Wahlert, 45-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls' basketball game Friday night at Kennedy High School. But the outcome was a side note.

As the Cougars completed the victory, Morgan Martin watched in the corner of the gym, her leg elevated and her face grim.

Martin an all-stater in Illinois last year at Quincy Notre Dame before moving to Kennedy last summer suffered an injury to her left knee.

"It could be a lot of things," said a somber Kennedy Coach Tony Vis. "It could be anywhere from a bad bruise to a meniscus to an ACL."

In other words, Martin will be out a while. Maybe the rest of the season.

"No matter how long she's out, it's going to be detrimental for us," Hendrickson said. "She's going to be missed. We're going to have to work through it."

Martin was injured with 3:10 left in the first quarter, when she was fouled on a baseline drive. She fell to the ground in obvious pain, slapping the floor multiple times.

Kennedy (2-0 overall, 2-0 MVC) went on to build a 13-point lead in the third quarter, then held on after Wahlert (1-2, 0-2) crept within 43-41 with 35 seconds left.

"At the end, things got a little squirrelly," Vis said. "We made some turnovers and missed some free throws. That made it very interesting."

Brianna Vis made a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to put Kennedy up by four, then made a steal to seal the win.

"Near the end, we started thinking the ball was a grenade," Hendrickson said. "That is something we need to improve on."

Stephanie Botkin led the Cougars with 11 points. Brianna Vis added nine, Hendrickson seven.

Wahlert's Logan Lynch scored 17 despite missing the entire second quarter with three fouls.

"That obviously hurt," said Wahlert Coach Kris Spiegler said. "But tonight was about the little things. One fewer turnover. One more box-out. One more loose ball."

Kennedy plays a non-conference game Saturday at Pleasant Valley.
