Cyclones' Saina Named Cyclones' Female Athlete Of The Year

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State track star Betsy Saina has been named the school's female athlete of the year for the second year in a row.

Saina won her third NCAA title last weekend, taking first in the 10,000 meters at the national outdoor meet in Fayetteville, Ark.

Saina also finished second in the 5,000 and fourth in the 3,000.

Saina won eight Big 12 titles and earned All-America honors 11 times in her career. She is the fifth Cyclone woman to win athlete of the year twice.

Golfer Scott Fernandez was named Iowa State's male athlete of the year on Monday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has named golfer Scott Fernandez as the school's male athlete of the year.

Fernandez was a first-team All-Big 12 selection this spring, and he earned second-team All-American honors from Golfweek magazine.

Fernandez finished the year ranked 18th nationally after breaking the school's single-season stroke mark at 71.27.

Previous male athletes of the year for the Cyclones include Fred Hoiberg, Marcus Fizer and Olympic gold-medal winning wrestlers Cael Sanderson and Jake Varner.
