Coe Hosts Invite, Three Earn Titles

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa Three Kohawk wrestlers earned individual titles at the Coe College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. An additional six Coe wrestlers battled their way to second-place finishes.

Senior Beau Westpfahl (Jesup, Iowa/Jesup) earned the title at 141 pounds. After a first-round bye, Westpfahl pinned Dan Roach of Harper College in just 46 seconds. In his second bout of the day he earned an 11-0 major decision over Jeff Sand of Simpson. A pin of Missouri Baptist's Esmond Ford at 4:24 earned Westpfahl a trip to the final. He earned the title at 141 pounds after Gresh Henderson of Harper was unable to start the match due to an injury suffered earlier in the day.

Sophomore Farai Sewera (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) defeated Nathaniel Stadeker of Grandview 6-4 in the championship match at 165 pounds. Sewera started his day with a pin of Ryan Thomas of Missouri Baptist at 1:03. He then defeated Spencer Ward of Simpson 18-4 to earn a major decision. Sewera earned another major decision, this one 12-3 over Tristin Luther of NIACC, before defeating Stadeker in the finals.

Coe's third individual champion was senior Cory Becker (Waterloo, Iowa/Don-Bosco) at heavyweight. Becker began the day with a bye but in his first match he pinned Ryan Dugar of NIACC in 3:53. He then earned a 4-1 win over Julius Anglikas of Missouri Baptist to advance to the finals where he won due to teammate Creighton Fox (DeWitt, Iowa/DeWitt) suffering an injury in an earlier bout and being forced to forfeit.

Fox started his quest to the finals with a first-round bye. He defeated Dean Broghammer of Grandview 6-5 in the second round and then earned a 10-3 victory over Alex Stockton of NIACC in the semifinals.
At 125 pounds, senior Tyler Endres (Independence, Iowa/Independence) pinned Vikash Hypio of Cornell in 2:10 in round one. He then earned a 18-7 major decision over Tanis Arcos of Harper and followed that up with a 14-5 major decision over Arcos' teammate Jake Bellis. Endres fell to Ryak Finch of Grandview 5-3 to take second.

Freshman Jan Rosenberg (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) finished fourth at 125 pounds. He earned a 17-0 technical fall over Cornell's Scott Smith to begin his day but was then pinned in 2:15 by Bellis. In his first match in the consolation bracket, Rosenberg defeated Cornell's Mitch Hood 19-9, earning a major decision. He then pinned teammate Jake Gotto (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) in 2:35 before earning a 3-1 win over Jorge Pau of NIACC. In the third-place match, Rosenberg was pinned by Bellis in 3:24.

In the 133 pound weight class, senior Jimmy Gotto (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) defeated Harper's Cody Brandle by technical fall 18-2 in round one. He then earned a 6-4 win over Chris Padilla of Missouri Baptist to earn a trip to the finals. Unfortunately, Gotto suffered an injury in the bout with Padilla and was unable to wrestle Grand View's Andrew Clark for the title.

At 149 pounds, sophomore Josh Donkle (Greeley, Colo./Windsor) earned a second-place finish, losing by fall to Nosomy Pozo of NIACC in the finals. To get to the title match, Donkle pinned Jon Denikas of Harper at 1:33 in the first round and the earned a 10-6 win over Missouri Baptist's Espen Conley.

Senior Dimitri Boyer (Eddyville, Iowa/Eddyville-Blakesburg) earned another second-place finish for the Kohawks, this one at 157 pounds. Boyer started the day with a 5-2 win over John Woods of Missouri Baptist and followed that up with a 12-2 major decision over Cody Marks of NIACC. Boyer pinned Grandview's Grant Henderson in 41 seconds in the semifinals before falling 8-5 to NIACC's Yoanse Mejias in the championship match.

Junior Donnie Horner (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) earned runner-up honors at 197 pounds. After a first-round bye, Horner defeated Missouri Baptist's Josh Glore by technical fall, 20-5. He then earned another technical fall over Glore's teammate Lucas Keene, this one coming by a score of 19-3. Horner fell to NIACC's Shakheim Chapman 3-2 in the finals, finishing second.

Sophomore Blair Kerkhoff (Audobon, Iowa/Audobon) finished sixth at 141 pounds, while fellow sophomore Tim Noverini (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) was fifth at 149 pounds. Sophomore Peyton Wagner (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) was fifth at 165 pounds, defeating teammate Taylor Wedeking (Plainfield, Ill./Nashua-Plainfield). Freshman Garrett Kelson (Danvers, Ill./Olympia) defeated teammate Michael Rathbun (Danvers, Ill./Olympia) in the fifth-place match of the 174 pound weight class. At 197 pounds, sophomore Casey Rohret (Cosgrove, Iowa/Clear Creek-Amana) finished fifth.

The Kohawks will be back in action on Thursday, December 5 when they welcome Iowa Conference foe Buena Vista to Eby Fieldhouse for a dual meet. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
