DECORAH, Iowa - Jared McNutt threw two touchdown passes and Brendan Leiran ran for 135 yards and one score Saturday as Coe crushed Luther, 35-7, to clinch the Iowa Conference championship.
The 14th-ranked Kohawks (9-0, 6-0 IIAC) scored 21 points in the second quarter and led 21-0 at halftime in cruising to victory at Luther's Carlson Stadium in Decorah. It was Coe's 10th straight win.
"I couldn't be more proud of a bunch of guys that really sacrificed a lot to get themselves in this position," Coe Coach Steve Staker said on radio station KMJM after the game. "Just a great bunch of kids. I wouldn't say we played our best game. But when we can get by without playing our best game and do (this), that's a great tribute to them."
Luther fell to 0-9, 0-6.
McNutt tossed scoring passes of 7 yards to Jacob Workman and 6 yards to Colin Ferring. Leiran had a 1-yard TD run and Carvin Thompson ran 49 yards for a score for Coe in the third quarter.
Mark Atwater, a former Linn-Mar star, threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Alex Christenson in the fourth quarter for Coe, which had a shutout before Adam Bohr caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Kody Moore with 16 seconds remaining in the game.
ILLINOIS COLLEGE 50, CORNELL COLLEGE 28 Davis Kinville ran for three touchdowns and Cecil Brimmage ran for two for Illinois College at England Stadium in Jacksonville, Ill.
Illinois College (8-1, 7-1 Midwest Conference) had at least one touchdown in every quarter. Cornell College (3-6, 3-5) led 14-8 after the first quarter before succumbing.
Juan Flores was 23 of 34 for 259 yards and three touchdowns for Cornell. Justin Cox caught six passes for 136 yards and two TDs. Ben Knake led the Rams with 10 catches for 106 yards.
WAYNE STATE 17, UPPER IOWA 14 Max Martin kicked a 47-yard field goal with 2:13 remaining to give Wayne State the Northern Sun victory in Fayette.
Upper Iowa (2-7, 0-5) and Wayne State (4-3, 2-3) had traded touchdowns to that point, both of the Peacocks coming on Cole Jaeschke passes to S. Gutman from 10 and 6 yards.
DAYTON 28, DRAKE 13 Dayton scored 21-second-half points to pull away from defending Pioneer Football League champion Drake in Dayton, Ohio.
Dan Jacob rushed for two touchdowns for the Flyers (5-5, 4-3). Drake (6-3, 5-1) turned the ball over three times in its first league loss this season.
The game was tied at 7 at halftime, and Drake trailed 14-13 early in the fourth quarter after Cam Bohnert's second field goal.
