Coe Volleyball Sweeps Loras, Advances to IIAC Tournament Final
From Coe Athletics
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kohawks defeated the Duhawks 3-0 in the Iowa Conference Tournament Semifinals. With the win they advance to the IIAC Tournament Championship next Saturday where they will face Wartburg.
In the first set of the match, Coe jumped out to an early 7-3 lead and forced Loras to take a timeout. The Duhawks came out of the timeout and went on a 5-1 run to tie the match at 8 and force a Kohawk timeout. Coe responded by stringing together a 7-2 run, taking a 15-10 lead and forcing yet another Loras timeout. The Kohawks closed out the set on a 10-3 run, taking the set by a score of 25-13.
Junior Rachel Schaefer (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) led Coe with four kills in the set. The Kohawk trio of sophomores Mackenzie Harbaugh (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) and Brianna Smith (Johnston, Iowa/Urbandale), and freshman Katelin Langel (LeMars, Iowa/LeMars Gehlen) recorded two kills each. Junior Alissa Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) had four service aces in the set.
The Kohawks controlled set two from the get-go. A 3-0 run gave Coe an 11-5 lead, then a 9-2 spurt increased the lead to 20-7. The Kohawks closed out the set by stringing together a 5-2 run, winning the set 25-9 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Schaefer and Harbaugh led the Coe attack with three kills apiece. Langel, Smith, and senior Megan Barron (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) slammed down two kills each in the set. Langel also contributed two service aces.
The match's third set was a back-and-forth battle for much of the contest. The Kohawks called a timeout with the score tied at 10 in an effort to devise a strategy to create some separation. Unfortunately for Coe, that proved to be ineffective and it called another timeout trailing 16-15. This time the stoppage in play benefited the Kohawks, as they put together a 9-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. Coe ultimately won the set 25-18 to take the match 3-0.
Langel and Smith led the way for the Kohawks, each recording five kills in the set. Schaefer, Harbaugh, and junior Rachel Bosworth (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) all contributed three kills to the cause.
Coe's offense for the match was very balanced. Schaefer led the attack with 10 kills but Smith and Langel were not far behind, recording nine kills apiece. Harbaugh chipped in eight kills to go along with her match-high 30 assists. Wittenburg recorded a match-leading 23 digs and four assists. Harbaugh and Langel notched nine digs apiece, while sophomore Olivia Glaudel (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) and freshman Devon O'Connell (Maquoketa, Iowa/Maquoketa) each had eight.
With the win, the Kohawks advance to the Iowa Conference Tournament Final where a rematch with regular-season champion Wartburg awaits. That contest is scheduled to take place in Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, November 9 and it will begin at 7:00 p.m.
