Cedar Rapids' Lisa Paulos Gears Up For 135-Mile Ultra Race
By John Campbell, Reporter
Lisa Paulos loves to test herself.
She has run 100-mile races. On Monday, Lisa attacks the Arrowhead Ultra 135 in Northern Minnesota.
It was a 15-below-zero wind chill when Lisa hit the trails at Morgan Creek Park -- ideal conditions according to the Cedar Rapids Nurse who knows how cruel 135 miles on Northern Minnesota snowmobile trail can be in late January.
"It's about controlling your energy versus your output," she said. "Because if you start sweating, that's the Grim Reaper right there."
Paulos first attempted the Arrowhead Ultra in 2011 to test her limits. She couldn't finish after the 35-below temperatures of the first night. In 2012, she finished.
Lisa will walk and run the course this year. Most will bike it, some will cross-country ski it. All must haul their supplies with them.
"It's very lonely, and some people quit even though they could finish physically," she said.
"If things go well, I'm going to finish a second time and then I'm not going to do it again," she said. "This is my limit."
