Nidiffer's Walk-Off Single in Tenth Inning Gives Kernels 6-5 Win Over Quad Cities

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Marcus Nidiffer's RBI single drove home Ricky Alvarez in the bottom of the tenth inning to send the Kernels to a walk-off 6-5 win over Quad Cities at Perfect Game Field on Thursday evening. The Kernels scored single runs in the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings for the victory.

In the tenth inning with the game tied 5-5, Alvarez led off by getting hit by a pitch from Quad Cities reliever Aidan Lucas. Jarrod Parks then blooped a single into right center, sending Alvarez to second base. Nidiffer then singled to left, scoring Alvarez and giving the Kernels the walk-off win.

The Kernels trailed 5-4 going into the ninth inning. Lucas came to the mound to begin the ninth for Quad Cities and walked Jean Almanzar with one out. Pinch hitter Rolando Gomez's pinch-hit RBI triple scored Almanzar and tied the game 5-5.

With the score 5-3 in the eighth inning, Randal Grichuk blasted a solo home run to left center to cut the River Bandits lead to 5-4.

Daniel Tillman (5-3) picked up the win in relief for the Kernels. He went 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit. Tillman began his outing in the ninth inning by striking out Geoff Klein with the bases loaded to end the inning. He then pitched a scoreless tenth inning.

Aidan Lucas (1-4) took the loss for Quad Cities, going 1.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked three.

The game was scoreless until the third inning. Quad cities put two runs across to take an early 2-0 lead. Ronny Gil scored on a fielding error by Almanzar. Oscar Taveras scored on a RBI single by Nick Longmire.

The Kernels scored one in the bottom of the third inning. Justin Bass drove home Travis Witherspoon with a RBI double, cutting Quad Cities lead to 2-1.

Quad Cities responded with two runs in the fourth inning, taking a 4-1 lead. Gil was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Klein. Taveras drove home Packy Elkins with a RBI sacrifice fly to left field.

The Kernels cut into the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Nidiffer drove home Grichuk with a RBI single in the fourth inning. Alvarez's RBI double bought home Witherspoon in the fifth inning, making the score 4-3.

Klein homered for Quad Cities in the sixth inning, extending the River Bandits lead to 5-3.

Seth Fowler started on the mound for the Kernels. He went three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits. Dakota Robinson pitched three innings, allowing one run on two hits. Manny Correa pitched two scoreless innings, and Tyler Kehrer pitched 0.2 inning of scoreless ball.

Trevor Rosenthal started for Quad Cities and went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

The Kernels conclude the home stand and series with Quad Cities on Friday evening at 6:35 p.m. Fireworks, presented by Bank of the West, will follow the game. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
