CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Clinton LumberKings blanked the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 2-0, Thursday night at Perfect Game Field to take two of three games in the series.
Clinton took advantage of six Cedar Rapids errors, scoring both runs thanks in part to Kernels miscues. The six errors were a season-high for the Kernels in 2011.
LumberKings starting pitcher Taijuan Walker (2-2) was excellent in his fifth start, earning his second win of the season. The 18-year-old hurler struck out seven and allowed only two hits in five innings of work.
Kernels starter Suammy Baez also pitched well, but picked up the loss in the game. Baez (1-5) tossed five innings of two-hit baseball while giving up one unearned run. Three Cedar Rapids relievers - Manny Correa, Donn Roach, and Daniel Tillman - kept the Kernels in the ballgame, combining to allow zero earned runs and only three hits over four innings.
Stefen Romero got the scoring started for Clinton in the third inning, giving the LumberKings a 1-0 lead with an RBI single that drove in Mickey Wiswall.
There wouldn't be any more scoring until the eighth inning when Clinton's Jabari Blash gave the Lumberkings a 2-0 lead with an RBI double off of Kernels reliever Donn Roach.
That was all the LumberKings needed to get the victory Thursday night, as the Kernels were unable to get anything going offensively.
Cedar Rapids recorded six hits, but couldn't come through in a clutch situation. The team stranded nine runners and was 0-7 with runners in scoring position.
