Kernels Fall to Snappers, 6-5
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Kernels ended on the wrong end of a 6-5 loss to the Beloit Snappers in a back and forth contest at Perfect Game Field on Wednesday night. Beloit's Rory Rhodes broke a 5-5 tie in the 8th inning with a monster solo home run out of the ballpark in left, giving the Snappers the one run advantage.
The Kernels got two men on in the bottom of the 9th inning but were unable to score as Corey Williams picked up his fourth save for Beloit. Williams went two innings and allowed no runs and no hits while striking out two and walking one. Carmine Giardina (1-2) took the loss for the Kernels in relief, going two innings and allowing one run on three hits. He struck out one and walked none.
Beloit pushed two runs across in the 1st inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Wang-Wei Lin singled to lead things off. He came home on a RBI double by Miguel Sano. Sano scored on a two-out fielding error by Kernels shortstop Wendell Soto on a ball hit by Adam Bryant.
The Kernels evened the score 2-2 in the 2nd inning as the Snappers committed three errors. Frazier Hall reached on a fielding error by Beloit 2nd baseman Eddie Rosario to lead off the inning. He came home on Chevy Clarke's RBI single. Andy Workman then singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Beloit pitcher Matt Summers attempted a pickoff attempt at 2nd base, but his throw was errant into center field. Clarke was safe at 3rd base after a throw from center field. On the throw Workman sprinted towards 2nd base. Beloit's 3rd baseman Sano threw wild to 2nd base, and the throw allowed Clarke to score and tie the game.
The Kernels took a 3-2 lead in the 4th inning. Workman doubled and came home on a RBI single by Soto. Beloit tallied three runs in the 5th inning to retake a 5-3 lead. Sano's RBI single plated A.J. Pettersen. Bryant's two RBI double brought Lin and Sano both home.
The Kernels tied the game 5-5 in the 7th inning. Abel Baker reached 2nd base on an error by Beloit 3rd baseman Sano. Soto's RBI double plated Baker, and Soto then scored on a RBI bloop single by Ryan Jones.
Austin Wood started for the Kernels, going 4.2 innings and allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits. He struck out six and walked one. Mike Johnson pitched 2.1 scoreless innings on two hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Ryan O'Rourke (1-1) picked up the win for the Snappers in relief, going two innings and allowing two runs (one earned). Summers started and went five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits.
