Cougars Edge Kernels 4-3 in Extras

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Kane County edged the Kernels 4-3 in 10 innings at Perfect Game Field on Saturday night, taking the first of three games in the series.

The Kernels took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Rolando Gomez singled home Francis Larson, and Travis Witherspoon scored when Jeremy Cruz reached on an error by Cougars third baseman Angel Franco.

The Cougars evened the score 2-2 in the eighth inning. With two outs, Brian Fletcher doubled to left center to score Franco and Geulin Beltre.

Brian Diemer started for the Kernels and picked up a no decision, allowing two runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings of work. He struck out three and walked none.

The Cougars plated two runs in the tenth inning, taking a 4-2 lead. With the bases loaded, Kernels reliever Manny Correa delivered a wild pitch that scored Jovan Pickett and Franco.

The Kernels scored once in the bottom of the tenth inning, cutting the Kane County lead to 4-3. Randal Grichuk tripled with one out and came home to score on a RBI sacrifice fly by Brian Hernandez.

Beau Brooks (0-1) took the loss for the Kernels, going 1.1 innings and allowing two runs on one hit. He struck out one and walked one. Correa went 0.2 inning and allowed no runs on no hits.

Jason Mitchell (2-0) picked up the win for Kane County. He went 4.2 innings in relief and allowed no runs on six hits while striking out four.

Antonio Cruz started for the Cougars and went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
