CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Kernels shortstop Jean Almanzar began playing baseball in his native Dominican Republic at the age of 7. It was also then that he began switch hitting.

Now 22, Almanzar has been in pro baseball for five years, but he missed last season due to visa problems.

Jean says he is trying to improve his speed and his batting.

Almanzar recently delivered the game winning hit for the Kernels and he believes the club will play better in the second half.
