GREEN BAY, Wisc. - Rookie Gavin Bayreuther had a pair of goals to help the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to a 4-1 win over the Green Bay Gamblers in their United States Hockey League season opener Saturday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
An 18-year-old defenseman from New Hampshire, Bayreuther just 1:21 in on an assist from Riley Bourbonnais. Green Bay scored late in the period to tie it, but Bayreuther notched a power-play goal four minutes into the second period to put Cedar Rapids on top for good.
Bryson Cianfrone scored with just eight seconds left in the second period for a 3-1 Riders lead. Judd Peterson, who assisted on Cianfrone’s goal, scored into an empty net with a second left for the final margin.
Chad Catt made 28 saves for the win in net. The teams each had 29 shots on goal.
The RoughRiders open the home portion of their schedule this week with games Friday night against Fargo and Saturday night against Youngstown.
