WBB: Hawkeyes Land 6-Foot-3 Minneapolis Forward
By Jeff Linder, Reporter
IOWA CITY — Not so long ago, Chase Coley was a point guard.
Then she grew.
Now a 6-foot-3 forward from Minneapolis, Coley confirmed Thursday that she has committed to play women’s basketball at the University of Iowa.
“I have a really good network down there with people that care about me,” Coley said. “And I like what the coaches stand for.”
Coley is the fourth member of the Class of 2014 to commit with the Hawkeyes. She joins Christina Buttenham (Hamilton, Ont.), Whitney Jennings (Logansport, Ind.) and Carly Mohns (Brodhead, Wis.).
She averaged 20.0 points, 17.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 4.9 steals and 8.8 blocks per game for Minneapolis Washburn, which went 23-9 last season.
“When I got taller and stronger, my coaches moved me to the post because of my height,” Coley said. “But I can play pretty much any position. I’m not just a big, slow post.
“I brought the ball up the floor a lot when I was younger, then I grew a lot between middle school and my sophomore year.”
Now she hopes to gain strength on her 150-pound frame.
“They told me about Morgan Johnson, about how skinny she was and how much stronger she became,” Coley said. “I don’t think I’m done growing. My doctor says he thinks I’ll get to 6-4.”
