IOWA CITY — Iowa junior Josh Oglesby plans to play this Sunday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, his first action this season since breaking his foot in early November.

“I’m looking forward to it, to get back on the court with my teammates. It sucks sitting on the bench and watching them play,” said Oglesby, a Cedar Rapids Washington graduate.

Oglesby suffered a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot on Nov. 6 and had surgery two days later. Doctors inserted a metal screw into his foot, and Oglesby spent most of November either on crutches or a walking boot.

He recently returned to practice, albeit in limited amounts. Oglesby said if the team scrimmages for eight minutes, he might compete for four. His conditioning is way behind, he concedes.

“I haven’t had a full practice yet. I can feel myself starting to get there,” Oglesby said. “The first week or so when I got back on the court I was dead. But recently I’ve felt like I’m getting in better shape but nowhere where I was before.”

The only time he feels any pain in his foot is with lateral movements or sharp stops after sprints.

“My foot doesn’t really bug me that much anymore,” Oglesby said. “Defensively is the only place where I can feel the pain, when I’m pushing off my right foot.”

Oglesby started seven games and played in 72 over his first two seasons at Iowa. He averaged 5.4 points a game.

Even with Iowa’s deep rotation, Oglesby’s teammates said there’s room for the 6-foot-6 shooting guard.

“Obviously his shooting,” Iowa sophomore point guard Mike Gesell said. “He’s also a very good defender, I think his defense is pretty underrated. So he’s going to bring that. He’s a competitor. He’s another guy that you can find in transition. He’s another guy we can rely on to make shots, and he’s going to bring a lot to the table for us.”

“Hopefully he continues to shoot the ball, and he plays defense the way he’s capable of,” Iowa senior Devyn Marble said.

Sunday’s game is the non-conference finale for Iowa. Tip set for 1 p.m. Sunday (ESPN3.com).
