IOWA CITY, Iowa - When you kick at Iowa, you're automatically privy to advice from one of the greatest kickers in school history.

And yes, Iowa junior Mike Meyer does talk and text with Nate Kaeding, Lou Groza Award winner at Iowa and kicker for the San Diego Chargers. One simple piece of advice has really seemed to pay off for Meyer.

"The greatest piece of advice I've gotten was when Nate Kaeding told me to treat every kick like it's a Super Bowl-winning kick," Meyer said after his 42-yarder ended up being the winning points in Iowa's 19-16 double-overtime victory at Michigan State last weekend. "So, I take that mentality into everything."

Meyer earned Big Ten special teams player of the week Monday. Against the Spartans, the former walk-on from Dubuque hit four field goals, including two in overtimes. This season, he's made 14 of 15 this season. His 2.5 field goals a game is eighth in the country. His percentage (93.3) is 10th, trailing only perfect kickers, including Northwestern's Jeff Budzien.

Meyer has made 13 consecutive after missing a 40-yarder in the season opener against Northern Illinois. Last weekend was the second time this season he's made four field goals in a game. He also was named a "star of the week" by the Lou Groza Award committee, a postseason award that goes to the nation's top kicker.

"No one ever really gets there, but he turned the corner from a confidence standpoint, a maturity standpoint back in spring," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "He really started performing the way we thought he would. . . . We don't take it for granted, but his execution was flawless."
