Micah Hyde Earns Big Ten Defensive Honor

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Iowa senior Micah Hyde won the Big Ten’s Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the year, the Big Ten announced Monday night.

Hyde, a three-year starter for the Hawkeyes, finished fourth in the Big Ten this season with 15 passes defended. He also had an interception, forced two fumbles and finished fourth in the converence with 7.44 yards on 16 punt returns.

This is the second season the Big Ten has awarded player of the year for all positions. Hyde joins wide receiver Marvin McNutt as recipients for the Hawkeyes. McNutt won the Richter-Howard Receiver of the year honor last season.

During his three seasons as cornerback, Hyde picked off eight passes and broke up 29. He also scored three defensive TDs during his career, including a fumble return for a TD this season.

Hyde holds eighth and 10th longest interception returns in Iowa history. He had 72-yard touchdown on an interception return against Missouri in the 2010 Insight Bowl that gave Iowa the victory. He also had a 66-yard touchdown return against Michigan State the same season.

Hyde was the only Hawkeyes, whose season ended at 4-8 last weekend, to earn consensus first-team by Big Ten coaches and league media. Last season, he was second team all-Big Ten by media and honorable mention by league coaches.

Center James Ferentz was second-team pick on the coaches ballot.
