Wrestling: Hawkeyes Improve To Second In WIN Tournament Rankings

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Iowa wrestling team jumped a spot in the latest installment of the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine rankings, released Dec. 3.

The Hawkeyes climbed from third to second in the poll, but remain fourth in the dual rankings. Penn State is atop both lists. Oklahoma State remains second in the duals and third in the tournament ratings. Minnesota is third in duals and fourth in the tournament rankings.

The Hawkeyes are led by top-ranked Matt McDonough (125) and Derek St. John (157) and No. 2 Tony Ramos at 133. Heavyweight Bobby Telford is fifth for Iowa. Mike Evans and Ethen Lofthouse are eighth at 174 and 184, respectively. Evans recently moved up to 174 and is 2-0 in that weight, including a major decision Saturday against Iowa State’s Tanner Weatherman. Senior Mark Ballweg (141) is ranked 15th and freshman Nathan Burak is 20th at 197.

Iowa State is led by 15th-rated 184-pounder Boaz Beard. Sophomore Kyven Gadson at 197 and heavyweight Matt Gibson are ranked 18th, respectively.

UNI has two ranked wrestlers. Ryan Loder is 10th at 184 and former Denver-Tripoli wrestler Levi Wolfensperger was 20th at 133.
