Guttenberg-Terry Milks of Robins remembers many Thanksgiving weekends when he was already looking down a hole in the ice. Last Saturday he and Dan Bliss from Marion were casting for largemouth on a Mississippi backwater that had been producing for them in recent weeks. Bliss said the bass are feeding to get ready for the winter, but the action is slowing as water temperatures slide. We hit the "red zone" Saturday in an area where the water temperature had climbed to 43 degrees. The bass weren't hitting hard, but they were hitting and that's why Dan and Terry knew they were fishing on borrowed time in the great outdoors. It won't be that long before those backwaters are frozen solid.
