Kahler Wins Senior City AM
Golfers in this year's Cedar Rapids Senior Men's City Amateur proved that men 50 and older still have plenty of game.
Steve Kahler of Marion won the Open Division one of four contested in the two-day tournament with rounds of 76 and 69 for a 145 total. His 1-under-par 69 Sunday at Jones Park Golf Course secured the victory.
"I was hoping to shoot around par," said Kahler, the golf coach at Linn-Mar. "I did one better than what my goal was today."
Kahler had a one-stroke lead after the first round last year, but lost it on second day.
"It was the same situation this year," he said. "But I learned from last year and tried not to make the same mistakes."
The difference this year may have been playing the course at Jones Park before the tournament.
"It (Jones) was fresh in memory," he said. "It helped a lot with club selection and reading the greens because sometimes it can be pretty tricky with the humps."
There were 40 players entered in the Open Division. Kevin Dolan finished in second with a 152, followed by Steve Nielson at 154.
"Things were getting a little tighter out there," Kahler said after his first City Am title. "I shot back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 on a couple 30-foot putts that went in. Those shots gave me a little breathing room."
Reno Faust of Hiawatha won the Senior Division (50-59), shooting rounds of 79 and 76 for a 155.Faust won the tournament two years ago and, in his four years of playing in the Senior Division, has not finished worse than second.
"I played mediocre," Faust said. "Not great, but not terrible. Just good enough I guess."
Faust won despite hitting into four hazards.
"There are some interesting places you can hit a ball here," he said.
John Collins placed second with rounds of 79 and 78 for a 157. Mark Ultis finished in third at 162.
Mark Hathaway, 62, of Cedar Rapids won the Super Senior Division at 145 with rounds of 73 and 72.
"I thought I played really well today," Hathaway said. "I did a lot of scrambling. If I missed the green, I scrambled."
This was the first year that Hathaway competed in the Super Senior Division.
"This year I thought, well I'm getting a little older," said Hathaway, who has been playing in the Open Division. "It worked out pretty well."
Terry Moran finished second, shooting 149, and Michael Zoll was third at 150.
It took an extra playoff hole for Don Bear to win the Silver Senior Division (70-plus) after tying Ron Brandt and Jack Peacock at 153.
