Zach Johnson surged past Tiger Woods in the at the World Challenge in California today -- but only briefly.

Johnson opened the day two shots back of Woods, but he took the outright lead at 11-under with a birdie on the ninth hole.

But the back nine was a struggle. Johnson hit into a sand trap off the tee on Hole 12, and into the water on Hole 15, double-bogeying both holes. He finished the day at nine-under par and still two strokes back from Woods.
