Taking Care of Business: Iowa Beats Missouri State, 28-14
By Marc Morehouse and Scott Westerberg, Reporters
IOWA CITY, Iowa The Hawkeyes dominated the first half statistically, but couldn't finish drives and ended up with just a 7-0 lead against Missouri State.
This is an FCS team that finished 3-8 last season and lost its home opener against Northwestern State. So, yeah, that was an unsatisfying half of football.
Iowa eventually held off the Bears, 28-14, with a cleaner second half, snapping a seven-game losing streak.
Iowa led 21-0, but then MSU quarterback Kierra Harris hit wide receiver Julian Burton for a 27-yard TD to put the Bears on the board. Then after the kick off, Iowa QB Jake Rudock didn't see outside linebacker Rique Bentley, who dropped in coverage in front of tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz and picked off a floating pass, winning a race to the pylon to pull MSU within 21-14 with 14:15 left in the fourth quarter.
The Hawkeyes answered with a 10-play, 65-yard drive that kind of shut the door with a 28-14 lead with 9:57 left in the game.
Rudock completed 19 of 28 for 193 yards and the interception. Running back Mark Weisman rushed 30 times for 180 yards and two TDs (10 and 3 yards). Rudock also rushed for a pair of TDs (6 and 2).
Iowa had 11 penalties for 100 yards.
That won't work at Ames.
