IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) In what's often been a trying stretch for Iowa, the Hawkeyes finally got to clear out the bench and savor an easy victory.
Devyn Marble had 19 points and six assists, freshman Aaron White added 17 points and Iowa pounded Central Arkansas 105-64 on Monday night.
Melsahn Basabe had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Hawkeyes (7-5), who cracked the 100-point barrier for just the second time under coach Fran McCaffery.
Iowa opened the game with a 24-5 run and led by 13 at halftime despite five 3-pointers from Central Arkansas's Dewan Clayborn. The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 75-46 with 12 minutes remaining and cruised to back-to-back victories for the first time in a month.
"That was a fun game. I liked the pace of that game. We got out and ran," White said. "A good win for us."
Clayborn had 18 points to lead the Bears (5-5), who've dropped two in a row after winning five straight.
Central Arkansas never led, but it briefly scared the Hawkeyes with a pair of runs late in the first half.
However, Iowa put any notion of an upset to rest early in the second half.
The Hawkeyes opened with an 18-4 run, capped by a three-point play from Basabe and a layup by Bryce Cartwright, to open up a 29-point lead.
Freshman Gabe Olaseni put the Hawkeyes over the century mark on a putback with 3:39 left. Olaseni, a 6-foot-10 center from London, scored eight points with three blocks in just nine minutes.
"Once he gets settled down, he impacts the game," McCaffery said. "How many players who are that big and have that kind of reach play with that kind of energy level and speed and quickness? That's why I think he has a chance to be special, because he accepts coaching and he works hard."
This was the fourth win by 20 points or more this season for Iowa, which has shown signs of progress since a disheartening 0-2 road trip against rivals Northern Iowa and Iowa State.
Iowa got after the Bears early, racing ahead by double digits while some fans were still settling into their seats.
Eric May's open 3-pointer gave the Hawkeyes an 11-2 lead four minutes in, forcing Central Arkansas coach and former University of Arkansas star Corliss Williamson to call a quick timeout. It didn't help, as Marble's bucket and White's 3-pointer put Iowa ahead 24-5.
The Hawkeyes hit nine of their first 13 shots and registered assists on eight of them. Iowa finished with 32 assists, including six from the resurgent Marble.
Marble has scored in double figures in five straight games.
"He just keeps getting better," McCaffery said.
But the Bears finally got going behind three straight 3-pointers from Clayborn a backup shooting 20 percent from behind the arc entering Monday and his fourth of the half pulled the Bears within 31-23.
May hit a 3-pointer and layup in the final 17 seconds to put Iowa ahead 55-42 at the half.
LaQuentin Miles had 12 points for Central Arkansas, which rolled off five straight victories from Nov. 22 to Dec. 7, tops among Southland Conference teams.
But Iowa was just the second high-major the Bears had played, and Stanford whipped them 91-52 in their season opener.
The Hawkeyes did the same, scoring as many points in the paint, 64, as Central Arkansas had from anywhere. Next up for the Bears is Drake on Wednesday, followed by a trip to No. 21 UNLV next week.
"Tomorrow is probably going to be our most important practice of the year, coming off a 41-point loss to a tough Iowa team," Williamson said. "How you respond to that the next day in practice is going to tell me a lot about our team."
