Prep Football: Regina Wins Again Behind Ward's 4 TDs

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Quarterback Mark Ward can seemingly make every throw.
The senior is precise with the short passing game, utilizing Regina’s speed assets on the outside. Ward can also connect on the big pass when he needs it.
Ward threw for 266 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class 1A top-ranked Iowa City Regina to an easy 54-20 win over Alburnett in a non-district game last night at Regina Field. The Regals extended their winning streak to 34 games.
“We have to take what they give us,” said Ward, who threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. “They were bringing a lot of guys in the box and leaving single coverage outside. We feel comfortable with our passing game.”
The Regals (6-0), save a tight 15-13 win at West Branch, have outscored opponents 242-41. Regina’s game next week against Wilton (6-0) will likely determine the District 6 championship and home-field advantage in the playoffs.
Regina led 28-0 less than a minute into the second quarter after Ward threw for scores on the first three possessions. He sidestepped a rusher and connected with top target Alex Balke on a beautiful 38-yard touchdown to open the game.
Quick throws turned into long scores on the next two possessions when Nate Streb caught touchdown passes of 40 and 58 yards. After another Alburnett punt, Mike Donovan capped a quick drive with a 2-yard touchdown run for a 28-0 lead with 11:15 left in the first half.
Ward left for a possession in that quarter, but returned for a 10-yard TD pass to Balke at the end of the half. Nine Regals caught passes, including Balke’s team-high eight receptions for 112 yards.
“It’s good when you can try and get touches for a lot of guys,” Regina Coach Marv Cook said.
Alburnett (3-3) converted two third-down conversions late in the first, ending in an 11-yard pass from Alec Phillipp to Kolton Rose. Phillipp added a 79-yard scoring pass to Colton Martin, who caught seven passes for 126 yards.
