Xavier Downs Jefferson, 39-14
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Behind a stifling defense and 216 yards rushing from Pat Chizek, Cedar Rapids Xavier continued its march to the postseason Friday night by downing Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 39-14, at Saints Field.
Chizek scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter and followed with a 25-yard scoring jaunt in the second. He added a 44-yard scoring run before halftime.
You have to give all the credit to the offensive line, Chizek said. Jefferson plays tough defense and those guys were outstanding.
Xavier quarterback Andy Didio was injured early and replaced by Blake Helms.
Give credit to Blake, Chizek said. Hes a baseball player here, and hes used to playing under pressure.
Saints Coach Duane Schulte also praised Helms.
Blake has worked hard in the weight room and came in tonight and did a nice job, Schulte said.
Schulte didnt know Didios status after the game.
He injured his shoulder, but beyond that we dont know much, Schulte said. Were not sure if he will be ready for next week against Linn-Mar.
Xavier (6-2) scored on a Jared Volz 2-yard run in the second quarter and Nathan Evens 80-yard punt return in the third. Chad Gilmer added two field goals and two extra points.
Jefferson is a very good football team despite their record, Schulte said. They play hard on every down. We are happy to come out of here with a win.
The coach said his team wasnt looking past the 0-8 J-Hawks.
This past week, we didnt think of anybody but Jefferson, Schulte said.
The J-Hawks scored late on 1-yard runs by Conner Herman and Tanner Unkel. Unkel rushed for 78 yards.
