MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Savannah Butler of Iowa City West had the best individual finish by an area swimmer Saturday at the state swimming meet, and the Women of Troy had the best team finish.
Butler was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.97 at the Marshalltown Community Y, nearly 5 seconds behind a blistering state record of 1:01.18 by Katharine Ross of Des Moines North. Iowa City High’s Lizzie Brown finished fourth in the breaststroke in 1:06.38.
“I really didn’t have any expectations at all going into this meet,” Butler said. “I just wanted to have fun and support my team and do the best I could for them. It’s surreal right now.”
Ames was the team champion with 274 points, 50 points better than runner-up Pleasant Valley. West was 10th with 106 points. Other area finishers were Cedar Rapids Kennedy in 14th, Linn-Mar 15th, Cedar Rapids Washington 22nd, City High 25th and Decorah 32nd.
