SOLON, Iowa - If the saying is true that you need a tough defense to win championships, Solon is primed for another state title run.

Using a stifling defense and stellar special teams play, the Spartans defeated Clear Creek Amana, 48-13, at Spartan Stadium Friday night in a Class 2A-6 prep football game.

Solon intercepted three Clipper passes, with Jake Morris returning one of the thefts 37 yards for a touchdown.

"We challenged our team to get some turnovers and we responded," Solon Coach Kevin Miller said. "We haven't had many this year and that's not what Solon football is about.

"The defense did a great job tonight in helping set up our field position, which was key to this game."

Derrick Loveless scored three touchdowns for the Spartans (3-1, 2-0), including an exciting 74-yard punt return.

"Derrick is capable of that on every play," Miller said.

Travis Brimeyer led the Spartans' offense with 105 yards on 16 carries.

Miller said he's not using Solon's past state championships as motivation this season.

"Our goal is daily improvement," he said. "We are getting there.

"We need to get more consistent in all areas offense, defense and special teams. I like this team and I see us turning in the right direction. Right now I'm looking for us to hit our stride and eliminate all the mistakes."
