Another Game, Another Blowout for Juggernaut Regina

MEDIAPOLIS, Iowa — The competitor in them has got to wish they could play a full game. Whether they admit it or not. But the talent in them keeps building leads so big, the clock runs continuously and they get taken out for reserves.

West Branch Ends Alburnett’s Dream Season

WEST BRANCH, Iowa — They didn’t stop Mitchell Harger. But the West Branch Bears slowed him enough. The Bears “held” Harger — the state’s leading rusher in all classes — to 151 yards, and avenged a regular-season defeat by defeating No. 7 Alburnett, 21-13, in a Class 1A football quarterfinal Monday night at Oliphant Street Field.

Once More with Scheel-ing

LA PORTE CITY, Iowa – Jay Scheel accounted for all three of unranked Union of La Porte City’s touchdowns as the Knights upset eighth-ranked Maquoketa Monday in a Class 3A quarterfinal, 21-13. Scheel returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown, ran 76 for another and fired a 4-yard touchdown pass to Bradley Gallup.

Beckman Moves on with 31-0 Route

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Derek Hammann rushed for 67 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Dyersville Beckman to a 31-0 win over Clarion in a Class 2A prep football quarterfinal last night at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Hammann scord on runs of 2 and 6 yards as the seventh-ranked Blazers improved 11-1. Clarion finishes 7-5.

Hill Too Much to Climb for Washington in 35-32 Loss to Cedar Falls

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – They finally found a Hill they couldn’t get over. Give the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors tons of credit for a remarkable run. They survived a bunch of early injuries, ended Iowa City High’s regular-season win streak and beat three ranked teams, including that memorable thriller Monday night at Linn-Mar. But they were done in Friday night by a pair of key second-half turnovers and a running back headed to Iowa State next year that simply wouldn’t let his team get beat.

Moore’s Big Game Powers Lisbon

LONE TREE, Iowa – Lisbon’s Trevor Moore is anxious to return to his role as fullback, but he certainly had a memorable game in his stint at halfback. The 5-foot-10 junior was moved to the featured backfield position when an early injured forced players to shuffle spots. He fit perfectly in his unexpected spot.

Younkin, Turnovers Doom West

IOWA CITY, Iowa — It was the headwear under the helmet that symbolized Blake Younkin. He exhibited a sort of black cap, designed with skulls and crossbones. Tough kid. Tough team.

Washington Pulls A Shocker

MARION, Iowa — Braedon Tovey felt a headache at the end of the game. He created a bigger one. Tovey engineered two touchdown drives in the final 5 minutes as Cedar Rapids Washington stunned No. 2 Linn-Mar, 28-26, in a Class 4A second-round playoff football game Monday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Union Ends Solon’s Long Playoff Run

SOLON, Iowa - For the first time since the 2006 state finals, Solon is out of the high school football playoffs. Union of La Porte City’s senior running back Wes Burnside shouldered the load. Sophomore quarterback Jay Scheel delivered in the clutch. And Union snapped Solon’s eight-game win streak with a 39-24 victory in a second-round, Class 3-A football playoff on Monday.

Big Plays Allow West Delaware to Rally Past Webster City

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The hare beat the tortoise this time. Quarterback Trey MacTaggart and tailback Sam Lahr doubled as Supermen (or track men) on this Halloween night and led the seventh-ranked West Delaware Hawks to a 39-28 comeback win over No. 4 Webster City in Class 3A state playoff second-rounder at the UNI-Dome.

Special Teams Lift Lisbon in Second Round

LISBON, Iowa — Lisbon’s march to the UNI-Dome continues. The Lions held off a pesky Lynnville-Sully team, 44-33, Monday night in a Class A football playoff game and advanced to play Lone Tree in a quarterfinal game Friday night. Special teams were the difference for the Lions.

Iowa City West Puts on Offensive Show in First-round Win

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Those defensive problems seem a lot smaller when Iowa City West scores like this. Quarterback Charles Rogers accumulated 488 total yards and five touchdowns as the high-powered Trojans offense reached a season-high in points in a wild 66-32 win over Dubuque Wahlert Wednesday night in a first round Class 4A playoff game at Trojan Field.

Harger’s Four TDs Lift Alburnett to First Playoff Win

ALBURNETT, Iowa — The Alburnett Pirates, behind Mitchell Harger’s 267 yards and four touchdowns, won their first playoff game in school history Wednesday night, as they knocked off Bellevue 33-14 in Alburnett. Harger scored on the Pirates (10-0) first offensive play, going 78 yards for the touchdown. He also had touchdown runs of 65, 62 and 5.

Regina Does it All in First-round Win

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa City Regina leans heavily on the run, and, with a talented backfield, for good reason. But do not accuse the Regals of having a one-dimensional attack. Regina delivered straight-forward running and over-the-top passing to defeat Davis County, 59-9, in a Class 2A first-round playoff game at Regina Wednesday night.

Lions Strike Fast, Roll Over Clinton

MARION, Iowa – If Clinton had any thoughts of upsetting No. 2 Linn-Mar last night those thoughts vanished about 20 seconds into the game. Senior quarterback Mark Atwater took off on a 66-yard scoring run on the first play from scrimmage and the Lions poured it on from there, rolling to an easy 47-0 win in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs Wednesday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Dominant Defense Powers Solon Over CPU

SOLON, Iowa – There is something to be said about staying true to yourself. And, when the foundation of four straight state championships was set in defense and special teams, those would surely come in to play when the Solon Spartans opened the postseason.

Little Hawks Capitalize, Smash Kennedy

IOWA CITY, Iowa — A short field led to a long night for the Kennedy Cougars. Ninth-ranked Iowa City High feasted on five takeaways, including an interception for a touchdown by Jeremy Johnson, and subdued Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 48-26, in a Class 4A first-round football playoff Wednesday night at Bates Field.

Henry Catches MVC Record; Lions Go To 9-0

CEDAR RAPIDS — Atwater to Henry. It’s a combination that has reached the Mississippi Valley Conference record book. And it might last forever.

Iowa City West Shocks No. 2 Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS - Second-ranked Cedar Falls lost for the first time this season tonight, as Iowa City West beat the Tigers, 21-10, at the UNI-Dome. Quarterback Charles Rogers led the Trojans to their seventh win in nine games. Rogers ran for first-half touchdowns of six and one yard. A blocked punt set up his initial TD run. Rogers, though, proved tough to stop. He rushed for 146 yards and passed for 157 more.
