Varner Makes US Olympic Team

IOWA CITY - A former Cyclone will represent the United States in the Olympics.
Jake Varner won the 96 kilogram Olympic wrestling trial last night, beating Tommy Rowlands 2-0 in a best of 3 matches.
Former UNI Panther Jordan Holm lost in the championship 2-0 to Chas Betts.
Varner is the only wrestler with local ties to make the US team ON Saturday.
Mike Zadick, Ryan Morningstar, Moza Fay, and Trent Paulson all came up short in the trials.
Some more local wrestlers will take the mat later today in hopes of earning a spot…Matt McDonough, the current Hawkeye will go at 121 pounds.
Then a couple former Hawks hit he mat. Brent Metcalf, one of the favorites at 145 and a half, Phil Keddy at 185, and Steve Mocco at Heavyweight.
Wartburg's John Helgerson will also be in action. It all starts Sunday morning at 9 am.
