NORMAN, Oklahoma (AP) By knocking down 15 of 30 3-point attempts - 10 in the first half alone - Iowa State proved to Oklahoma why it's the best long-range shooting team in the Big 12 on Saturday.
Iowa State (17-6, 7-3) was one 3-pointer short of tying a school record in a 77-70 victory that gave the Cyclones their third straight win.
"We got off to a great start," second-year ISU coach Fred Hoiberg said.
The Cyclones opened the game with four consecutive 3-pointers, so it was obvious they had the hot hand.
It was the 11th time this season ISU has made at least 10 shots behind the arc.
Melvin Ejim scored 21 points to lead five Iowa State players scoring in double figures.
Andrew Fitzgerald's career-high 27 points led the Sooners (13-9, 3-7), who focused on shutting down ISU leading scorer Royce White. White finished with three points, taking his only field-goal attempt with 1:38 remaining.
Scott Christopherson added 15 points, Chris Babb 12, Chris Allen 11 and Tyrus McGee 10 for the Cyclones.
ISU hit all four free-throw attempts in the final 30 seconds to seal the win.
"I was very pleased with our poise down the stretch," Hoiberg said. "For the third straight game, we did a good job of not forcing it, getting it in the right person's hands and not taking a bad shot."
Iowa State shot 10 of 18 from beyond the arc in the first half. Oklahoma made just one 3-pointer but scored 10 points off of six Cyclones turnovers, made 7 of 8 free throws and had 11 second-chance points.
Despite ISU's hot long-range shooting, Oklahoma never trailed by more than five points in the first half.
With a two-point halftime lead, the Cyclones never trailed in the second half but couldn't extend their lead beyond an eight-point margin.
Oklahoma tied the game with 7:48 remaining when Carl Blair scored on an uncontested drive to the basket. Babb then drained a 3-pointer as the Cyclones outscored the Sooners 18-14 for the rest of the game.
It was Iowa State's first win in Norman since 1996.
"They had a lot of open looks," Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. "We wanted to give some help on White, of course, but not any more than we could get back to the shooter. We didn't handle that as well as we needed to."
