Wartburg Earns Top Spot in Conference Preseason Coaches Poll

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—Wartburg, the defending Iowa Conference champion, was selected as the 2011 Conference Coaches Poll favorite in the preseason poll the IIAC office announced today.

The Knights received five of eight possible first-place votes and was ranked first or second on all eight ballots (coaches are not allowed to rank their own team) for a total of 69 points. Wartburg edged out Coe by two points (67 points, 2nd place) and Central was picked third (59 points).

Wartburg finished 2010 with an overall record of 10-1 and were undefeated (8-0) in Iowa Conference play as it claimed its 12th conference title.

The Knights find themselves among the Top 25 in a number of other national preseason polls: No. 8 Lindy’s, No. 9 by USA TODAY Sports Weekly, No. 12 by The Sporting News and No. 15 by D3football.com.

Wartburg opens the season Saturday, Sept. 3 on the road at Monmouth College. Opening kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
