Spartans Win on the Road; Finish 4th in IIAC

The University of Dubuque football finished the season 5-5 overall and 4-4 in IIAC to finish fourth place in the final conference standings with the 31-21 over the Buena Vista UNiversity Beavers on Saturday.

The Spartans opened the game early with a 53 yard touchdown strike by Colton Hansen to the NCAA Division III national leading wide receiver, Michael Zweifel in under three minutes into the match-up. The duo would team up once again in under three minutes to start the third quarter from 79 yards out for their second 50+ yard touchdown on the afternoon.

UD led after one half 16-7 on Zweifel TD, a 20-yard field goal by Matt Fehr, and a 24 yard reception by Demacus Fleming. BV's lone score came at 8:31 of the second quarter on a 11 yard run.

In the second half UD scored twice in the third quarter on a Zweifel TD, and another touchdown grab by Fleming from 27 yards out. They stretched the lead to 31-7 before the host Beavers scored the final two touchdowns of the game to cut the Spartan lead to 31-21 as time ran out.

Zweifel broke two more IIAC records in the game, he set marks in catches in a season 88 catches in a season and 1,236 yards, breaking marks of 83 catches in a season and receiving yards in a a season 1,182 by UD's Matt Plummer (1996). The conference mark only includes those games played against other IIAC opponents. Plummer's record was set when the IIAC had 11 teams and a 10-game IIAC schedule. He leads the IIAC in receptions a game (11.1, when second place in the IIAC has 5.6 a contest). He is the leader in receiving yards a game with 147.4 when second place is averaging just 69.9 yards a game. It doesn't end there as he also leads the IIAC in All-Purpose yardage with 148.6 yards a game in 2009.
