CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In convincing fashion, the 22nd-ranked Kohawk football team beat Cornell for the 10th-straight time Saturday at Clark field. Coe scored its second-most points ever against the Rams in a 56-7 victory. It was the third-time in school history the Kohawks have scored 56 points against the Rams.
It took the Kohawks two possessions to put the first points on the scoreboard. Taking over after back-to-back three-and-outs by the Rams, Coe started on its own 49-yard line. On second down and 10, sophomore quarterback Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) completed his third pass of the game on a 12-yard route to freshman Jared Kuehner (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) to the one yard line. The completion broke the school record for most completions in a season. On the next play, Boyle plowed in from a yard out to put the Kohawks on top 7-0 with 3:24 remaining in the first quarter.
Cornell went to its back-up quarterback Shane McNally on its next possession, but his time was cut short as he threw an interception to senior Joe Giachino (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) on just his second pass attempt of the game. Giachino returned the ball 30 yards, but a penalty on the Kohawks brought the ball back to their own 45-yard line.
Boyled used completions of 33-yards to junior Michael Rozum (Byron, Ill./Byron) and 13 yards to senior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland Story) to set up his second one-yard rushing touchdown of the game. The score by Boyle put Coe ahead 14-0 with 1:03 to play in the opening quarter.
With :42 remaining in the first quarter, freshman Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Iowa/Waukon) sacked Andrew Burdick, forcing a fumble at the Cornell six-yard line that senior Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) recovered. The sack broke the single-season school record for Weymiller in just his rookie campaign. Coe was unable to complete the fourth and goal situation, giving the Rams the ball back at its own four-yard line.
The Kohawk defense forced another three-and-out, which gave them the ball at the Cornell 44-yard line. Boyle hooked up with Rozum on two plays, one of which going for 34-yards, before running in from four-yards out on his own for his third rushing touchdown of the half, putting Coe ahead 21-0 with 10:46 remaining in the first half.
Rozum came away with another excellent play with 3:01 to play in the half. After a six-yard rush by Hammes, Rozum picked up a fumbled ball and ran it 75-yards for a touchdown, extending the Kohawk lead to 28-0.
With 6:57 to play in the third quarter, Harrison recovered a fumble that junior Elias Randel (Grundy Center, Iowa/Grundy Center) forced. After a 28-yard pass from Boyle to Kuehner, freshman Brendan Leiran (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) scored from five-yards out, making it 35-0 in favor of the Kohawks.
Coe took a 35-0 lead into the fourth quarter, but quickly added to that total. Weymiller forced another sack and fumble that was recovered by sophomore Tyler Hemry (West Union, Iowa/North Fayette) at the Cornell 40-yard line.On his first play of the game, junior quarterback Patrick Wallace (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) found Leiran for a 40-yard touchdown pass.
Wallace was quick to score once again. After the Kohawks stopped the Rams on fourth down at the Kohawk 20-yard line, Wallace and the offense took over on the Kohawk 13 with 10:24. On just his second play of the game, Wallace rushed 87-yards off the left side for his second touchdown in as many plays.
Cornell scored its only points of the game after an eight-play, 87-yard drive. Coe recovered the onside kick at the Ram 38-yard line. Freshman Matt Barnd (Marion, Iowa/Marion) rushed 16-yards before senior Caleb Hainey (Wapello, Iowa/Wapello) scored his first career touchdown on an eight-yard run, putting the final points on the scoreboard in a 56-7 victory. The Rams drove the ball down the field in the final minute, only to be intercepted in the end zone by sophomore Ben Carr (Clinton, Iowa/Prince of Peace) to end the game.
Hammes finished with a game-high 103 yards rushing on 18 carries. Boyle finished the day 13-of-24 passing for 209 yards, while rushing eight times for 31-yards. Boyle surpassed the 2,800 yard mark for total offense on the season in the game, becoming the first person to do so in school history. Rozum had a team-high five receptions for 104 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph's) had a game-high 11 tackles. Weymiller finished with nine tackles and three sacks, while forcing two fumbles. Weymiller's three sacks is tied for the second-most in school history. Harrison added eight tackles and one and a half sacks, along with three fumble recoveries. Junior Seth Johnson (Glidden, Iowa/Glidden-Ralston) broke up five passes, the second most in school history.
The Kohawks close the regular season with a 9-1 overall record and 7-1 record in the Iowa Conference. Coe will find out if they have qualified for the postseason Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. on ESPNews.
