The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday night they have declined to purchase the contract of outfielder Ryan Sweeney. The Cedar Rapidian told the club Friday he would not accept an assignment to Triple-A and has asked for his outright release so he can sign with another organization.

The Red Sox have two days to decide whether to honor Sweeney’s request.

Speculation is outfielder Jackie Bradley, a highly considered prospect, and veteran Mike Carp beat out Sweeney for two major-league spots available. Sweeney came to spring training as a non-roster invitee, meaning he was not part of the club’s 40-man major league roster.

“They didn’t purchase my contract, so I’m the odd man out,” Sweeney told MLB.com after speaking with Red Sox Manager John Farrell following Thursday night’s Red Sox-Twins spring training game in Fort Myers.

Sweeney, 28, hit .217 in 46 spring training at-bats, with two RBIs. He re-signed with the Red Sox in the offseason after spending an injury riddled 2012 season with the team.
