Iowa and Iowa State Ranked Top 25 In Attendance

Iowa placed 21st and ISU ranked 22nd in national basketball attendance, according to figures released today by the NCAA.

The Hawkeyes (13,625 home average) saw the nation’s eighth-largest increase by 1,756 fans per game. The Cyclones’ average grew by 378 fans per game to 13,393. It was the second straight season and just the third since 1993 that Iowa State averaged more than 13,000.

Both schools saw jumps in ticket sales as well. Iowa’s basketball ticket income exceeded its budget by nearly $400,000. Iowa State’s ticket numbers were up by $575,000.

Iowa’s attendance ranked sixth in Big Ten, which posted the nation’s largest basketball attendance for the 37th straight season. Indiana, the Big Ten leader, ranked fifth nationally with an average of 17,412 fans per game. Wisconsin (16,843) was seventh, followed by No. 9 Ohio State (16,524), No. 17 Illinois (15,013), No. 18 Michigan State (14,341), No. 21 Iowa (13,625) and No. 23 Minnesota (12,580). Maryland, which joins the Big Ten next year, ranked 25th.

ISU ranked second in the Big 12 behind No. 10 Kansas (16,438). Kansas State (12,528) finished No. 24.

Kentucky led the nation with 23,099 fans per game, followed by Syracuse, Louisville and North Carolina.
