GRINNELL - After hanging with Ripon College early on, and even leading, the Grinnell College football team saw the visitors put up a 24-point second quarter as the Red Hawks went on to post a 38-17 victory at Rosenbloom Field Saturday afternoon.
After forcing Ripon to punt on its opening series, Grinnell went to work with a drive that included a 48-yard pass from Mike McCabe '13 to Kelsey Davis '12 and another throw to Davis of 11 yards before Scott Koenning '10 (left) booted a 34-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 9:31 left in the first period.
But Ripon responded with a fury, as Matthew Miller rushed for a touchdown later in the period and added three more scores to go along with a field goal by Jacob Gahart to make it 31-3 at halftime.
Miller, who rushed for 152 yards in the game, added a TD in the third period to make it 38-3. The Pioneers refused to fold, though, putting together a five-play, 51-yard scoring drive that included a 19-yard pass from McCabe to Logan Granera '12. The series was capped by a 24-yard TD pass from McCabe to Granera with 3:38 left in the third period. Koenning's extra point kick made it 38-10.
Grinnell finished off the scoring when McCabe threw his third TD pass of the day, a 48-yarder to Robert Seer '12 with 12:51 left in the fourth period. Koenning's point after kick made it 38-17.
McCabe threw for 352 yards, completing 15-of-44 aerials. Davis caught five passes for 123 yards and Seer had three catches for 112 yards. Defensively, Marquis Bradley '11 (right) had 16 tackles, Ryan Boehm '10 totaled 12, Kyle Lobaugh '10 had 11 and Ryan Fletcher '10 tallied 10.
Grinnell is now 2-6 in the Midwest Conference and 2-7 overall, while Ripon improved to 6-2 in league play and 6-3 in all games. The Pioneers conclude the regular season next Saturday at Beloit College. Game time is noon.
