West Liberty-Back in the early 1960's new basketball uniforms arrived for the West Liberty girls basketball team, the Comettes.
There was, however, a problem. The uniforms said Belles. The coach at that time, unbeknownst to the principal, told the company to put that nickname on the uniforms.
There was much discussion and finally the student body voted to keep the Belles nickname for the girls' teams.
Now, some 45 years later, the Belles will become the Comets.
After prodding from the Department of Education and votes by the townspeople and students, the Belles nickname is being put out to pasture..
Starting next year, all West Liberty teams will be known as the Comets.
The uniforms will be phased out over the next three years.
